DeAngelo Hall returned a fumble 32 yards for a touchdown to end the first half, and the Washington Redskins needed an end-of-game penalty to hold off the Dallas Cowboys 13-7 Sunday night.

Hall helped forced a fumble by Tashard Choice, scooped up the ball and somersaulted into the end zone for Washington's only touchdown, making both Donovan McNabb and coach Mike Shanahan successful in their Redskins debuts.

The Cowboys had a chance to win on the final play when Tony Romo scrambled to find Roy Williams open for a touchdown, but Alex Barron was called for holding -- Dallas' 12th penalty of the game.

McNabb completed 15 of 32 passes for 171 yards for the Redskins (1-0).

Romo was 31 for 47 for 282 yards for the Cowboys (0-1).

Last week, Bob Sanders said he was as healthy as he has ever been.

Don't miss any of the action with NFL Audio Pass, which gives you access to every game's radio calls. Find out more here.
Now, he will be out of action indefinitely.

Sanders, the 2007 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, had surgery Wednesday to repair a torn biceps muscle in his right arm, an injury that could end his season again. Indianapolis Colts officials aren't yet saying how much time Sanders could miss.

"I don't know, and I don't want to say anything until I have all the information," coach Jim Caldwell said before the Colts practiced Wednesday.

A couple of hours later, the Colts announced that Sanders had surgery.

Colts president Bill Polian, appearing on NFL Network's "NFL Total Access," said the surgery -- performed by Dr. James Andrews -- was a success.

"We'll see over the next little while how much progress (Sanders) makes," Polian said. "He had the very same operation on the other arm last year and healed up in somewhere between 10 and 12 weeks. So if everything went swimmingly, you could probably anticipate that he would be back ... But we'll know more in a month in terms of the kind of progress that he's made. Right now, we're leaving him on the 53-man active roster, hoping and anticipating he'll be back some time before the season ends."

Sanders was hurt during Sunday's season opener when he awkwardly landed on his shoulder during the Houston Texans' first offensive series.

Sanders did light work during a non-contact practice Monday before having an MRI, then met with Andrews in Alabama to receive a second opinion Wednesday morning. Apparently, Andrews determined the two-time Pro Bowl safety needed surgery.

For Sanders, it's the latest addition to his long list of injuries.

Just 10 months ago, Sanders went on season-ending injured reserve with a torn biceps in the left arm. And since winning the league's top defensive honor and signing a five-year, $37.5 million contract after the 2007 season, Sanders has played in just nine games. He actually has missed more games (49) than he has played in (48) during his seven-year career.

Teammates are preparing for the worst.

"He's a family member and we'd love to have him out there," Pro Bowl defensive end Dwight Freeney said. "But life goes on, the game goes on. Unfortunately, we've played a lot of games without him, and I feel bad for him personally."

The Colts' release said it would "monitor" Sanders' rehabilitation before making any additional decision on his status.

"There's definitely several different routes that he can go," Colts owner Jim Irsay said Tuesday. "But it's way too early to say that he's definitely done for the season."

Melvin Bullitt, Sanders' replacement the last two seasons, is expected to rejoin the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the New York Giants. Bullitt has started 21 regular-season games and four playoff games over the past two seasons while Sanders was out.

Bullitt again returned to the lineup when Sanders left the Houston game. Bullitt picked off a pass to set up the Colts' first touchdown.

"His situation is definitely unfortunate," Bullitt said Wednesday. "I've talked to him a little bit, and he's doing fine."

Bullitt's return to the starting lineup, Caldwell said, also means he'll see a reduction in special-teams duty.

So the Colts adjusted the roster. On Wednesday morning, they announced they had signed safety DaJuan Morgan and waived offensive lineman Joe Reitz, an Indiana native who was claimed off waivers from the Miami Dolphins last week.

Morgan was the Kansas City Chiefs' third-round draft pick in 2008. He played in 28 games, made 34 tackles and had one fumble recovery. He was waived by the Chiefs on Sept. 4.

There's no need to fret about missing any games. You can watch every contest again with Game Rewind. Get more information here.
The Colts also announced that Anthony Gonzalez will miss Sunday's game against the Giants with a high ankle sprain. Caldwell hasn't said which ankle Gonzalez hurt.

Linebacker Clint Session (hamstring) and Freeney, who was given an extra day of rest, were the only other players to sit out Wednesday's practice. Left tackle Charlie Johnson did limited work as he recovers from a sprained right foot. Linebacker Cody Glenn (hamstring), defensive back Jacob Lacey (concussion) and center Jeff Saturday (right knee) were full practice participants.

But with Sanders' short-term and long-term future uncertain, the Colts can't afford to wait for answers.

"His presence will be missed," cornerback Kelvin Hayden said. "But like we say around here, it's next man up and we move forward."

Michael Vick has always appreciated the chance the Eagles gave him to return to the NFL. Now he has an opportunity to return the favor.

Vick will start at quarterback for the Eagles on Sunday against the Detroit Lions, the first time he will be under center at the start of an NFL regular-season game since his time with the Atlanta Falcons -- long before the world learned about his cruel world of dogfighting.

Eagles coach Andy Reid made it official Friday when he ruled quarterback Kevin Kolb out of Sunday's game with the concussion he suffered during the team's season-opening loss to the Green Bay Packers. Middle linebacker Stewart Bradley also was ruled out with a concussion.

Reid said both players passed the written part of the concussion test, but they had to see Dr. William Welch to pass the next phase. That appointment was set for Friday.

"We'll see how that goes before we go any further," Reid said.

Meanwhile, the Eagles head to Detroit looking to even their record at 1-1. And at quarterback will be Vick, who last started the final game of the 2006 season for the Falcons against, ironically enough, the Eagles.

"It would be gratifying," Vick said of leading the Eagles to a win. "This team took a chance on me when not many others would."

Vick missed the entire 2007 and '08 seasons after his involvement in a dogfighting ring came to light. The Eagles signed him last preseason and, after serving a four-game suspension, he played in 12 regular-season games, primarily as an option in the Wildcat formation.

For the season, Vick completed 6 of 13 passes for 86 yards with one touchdown. He also ran the ball 24 times for 95 yards and two touchdowns.

Any rust that might have been lingering came off in chunks last week against the Packers, though, when Vick entered the game in the second half with the Eagles trailing 20-3. Vick's elusiveness in the open field and strong arm helped Philadelphia pull within 27-20, before his last drive stalled on fourth-and-1 from the Green Bay 42.

Vick still finished 16-of-24 passing for 175 yards and one touchdown, and he also ran for 103 yards.

"Michael is excited to step in and play," Reid said. "As we all know, he was one of the great quarterbacks in the league before he was incarcerated.

"He did a great job of getting back into shape, that's No. 1," the coach added. "Then, the speed of the game -- you're talking about a guy who was one of the fastest players in the game and he was stumbling a little last preseason. Then you look last Sunday and he was as fast as he was. He not only ran for 100 yards, but he also threw the ball well."

Vick took all the reps with the first team in practice this week and should be as ready to start as he has been since he and the Falcons parted ways.

"This is a big game," Vick said. "It's not about me making my first start or none of that. I've put all of that aside. It's about us going on the road and trying to get a win. We need to go out there and get a win, that's what matters. Nobody wants to be 0-2."

Chan Gailey needed to see Ryan Fitzpatrick put some life into the Buffalo Bills' anemic offense only once before deciding Trent Edwards was expendable.

"After the way that Fitz played yesterday, I feel very confident about the direction we're going," Gailey said Monday, one day after the Bills (0-3) were beaten 38-30 by the New England Patriots. "Trent did the best he could and he's a great young man, and I wish him the best."

Kirwan: Edwards will find a job
NFL.com senior analyst Pat Kirwan was surprised by the timing of Trent Edwards' release by the Bills and said the QB will not be out of work
for long. More ... The Bills waived Edwards in a surprising move Monday, a few weeks after Gailey said he saw "light at the end of the tunnel" with the quarterback as his starter.

With Fitzpatrick the starter, Brian Brohm moves into the backup role in Buffalo.

Although the Bills lost Sunday, Fitzpatrick picked up the offense with 247 passing yards and 374 total yards -- producing more offense in one game than Edwards managed in his two starts to open the season.

Edwards was in his fourth season after being selected by the Bills in the third round of the 2007 draft and eventually replaced J.P. Losman midway through his rookie season. Edwards went 14-18 as Buffalo's starter.

Edwards was benched the day after going 11-of-18 passing for 102 yards with two interceptions in a 34-7 loss at Green Bay on Sept. 19. He showed little improvement one week after going 18-of-34 passing for 139 yards and one touchdown in a 15-10 loss to the Miami Dolphins.

It marked the second time that Edwards lost the starting job to Fitzpatrick in consecutive seasons.

Gailey wouldn't place all the credit for Buffalo's offensive improvement on the quarterback change, but the coach noted the unit was more effective under Fitzpatrick.

"It wasn't just one thing, but I think that Fitz did go in and play fairly well," Gailey said, even though Fitzpatrick threw two interceptions.

Players were caught by surprise, many learning of Edwards' release as it was broadcast in the locker room on a TV sportscast before team meetings.

"He was our starting quarterback two weeks ago, and something like this happens, it's got to be a shock to everybody," wide receiver Roscoe Parrish said. "We have to move on. We can't dwell on that."

Fitzpatrick was informed of the decision by Gailey, but that didn't make it any less surprising.

"I think it caught everybody off-guard. Trent's a well-respected and well-liked guy in the locker room," Fitzpatrick said. "Personally for me, this one's tough because we spent so much time together. He'll rebound and move on from this. And we've got to move forward."

Edwards was spotted briefly outside the locker room shaking hands with several players. Edwards then went into the nearby equipment room and didn't comment on his release.

Edwards' release marks a sudden reversal for a player who earned Gailey's confidence by beating out Fitzpatrick and Brohm in an offseason competition. Edwards failed to build on that trust by reverting to his familiar hesitant form which, a year ago, led Bills fans to label him as "Trent-ative" and "Captain Checkdown."

Gailey acknowledged he is open to second-guessing after how quickly Edwards went from starter to being cut.

"I can see where people would look at that and wonder what's going on," he said. "I felt that as we looked and evaluated everything that we had seen up to this point that this was the direction for the future of our football team."

The Bills play the New York Jets (2-1) on Sunday.
